Larry Bird’s high school coach, Gary Holland

In April, 2009 Matt Ginella, Senior Travel Editor of Golf Digest, went to French Lick, Ind. to report a story on the new Pete Dye golf course at the French Lick Resort. He met Gary Holland, Larry Bird’s high school basketball coach in 1974, the year Bird was a senior. Holland is now mowing fairways in French Lick, and Ginella interviewed him about what it was like to lead a legend. This is a video of the highlights of their conversation in the house that Bird built–the Springs Valley High School gym–where Bird averaged 30 points (and 20 rebounds) his senior year–and that was before there was a three-point line.
